Kitsch as a term in common parlance appeared in Munich among the art dealers there to denote art that is cheap in the mid-nineteenth century. A century later, kitsch made its way into theoretical frameworks, to include cultural currency brought about by urbanisation and mass-production values and began to imbibe political implications. Kitsch now would refer to values that have great mass appeal, a heightened affectation for all elements sensory and availability in multitude. Kitsch bears an association of negativity while at the same time there is a conscious application of kitsch as a critique of mass culture.
